health insurance
It is compulsory to have health insurance in the Netherlands.
You are free to choose from a large number of insurance companies offering insurance and most packages cover basic healthcare expenses such as visits to the local doctor, prescriptions and essential hospital treatment. All insurers are obliged to accept residents within their area. You are also within your right to change insurance providers at the end of the year should you wish. The insurance premium is paid in two parts: your employer pays part and a small amount is deducted directly from your wages. In addition you pay a premium directly to the insurance company. The cost will depend on what type of package you choose to take but is normally around 100 – 120 euros a month. At the end of the year you are also entitled to a ‘no claim’ rebate of up to 255 euros. If you do incur health costs, but less than 255 euros, you will receive a reduced rebate with the rest of the amount.
