residence permit
A resident's permit is called a verblijfsvergunning. Any extensions of residence permits or visa's will also be handled through the IND which (should) send out automatic forms for renewal. In theory citizens from the following countries do not need a residence permit: The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Greece, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Cyprus, Malta.
MVV (temporary residence permit)
With the exception of the countries listed below, all other nationals must first obtain a MVV, or authorization visa for temporary stay before relocating. This is then converted to a verblijfsvergunning whilst in the Netherlands. All holders of a MVV must apply for a work permit.
EU and EEA nationals plus citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Surinam and Monaco are exempt from this regulation.
As of 1 April 2004 the entire system of registration and applications for visas and residents permits has changed. All immigration and residence decisions are now handled by the IND or Immigration and Naturalization Service under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice.
